  Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial
 Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial   This museum is located near the D K Hospital in Raipur and was established by Raja Mahant Ghasidas of Rajnandgaon in the year1875. The museum has two floors featuring five galleries and features different sections including archaeology, anthropology and natural history. Besides, it also displays crafts, jewelry, paintings and terracotta belonging to tribal culture. The museum also has an interesting library.
  Budhapara Lake
Budhapara Lake   It is a magnificent lake and is also one of the prime tourist attractions in Raipur. The lake was built by the Kalchuri emperor King Brahmadeo around 1402 AD.
Kho Kho Lake
Kho Kho Lake  

Another prominent Lake in Raipur is the Kho-kho lake. The lake is an example of formation art.

  Shaheed Smarak Complex
Shaheed Smarak Complex   It is a remarkably conceptualized structure designed by the architect Prasanna Kothari that should not be missed out on a tour to Raipur. It is a memorial dedicated to the Indian freedom fighters that consists of a massive auditorium, library, museum and an art gallery.
 Mahakoshal Art Gallery
Mahakoshal Art Gallery   It is one of the most important among the tourist attractions in Raipur and is in an octagonal shape situated near D.K. Hospital. This gallery exhibits some of the attention grabbing art works of the locals.

 Bhilai
Bhilai   24 kms from Raipur, Bhilai is an industrial township with one of the biggest steel plants in India. The city of Bhilai with its modern and cosmopolitan lifestyle is a new world-class capital city coming up near Raipur's airport. Raipur is at the centre of the rail and road routes between Mumbai and Kolkata, and is well connected to Delhi and Chennai. Bilaspur's Railway Division is the most profitable Railway operation in the country, contributing 17% of the revenues of Indian Railways.
 Sirpur
Sirpur  

It takes just an hour from Raipur to reach Sirpur. It is situated on the banks of river Mahanadi. In the ancient times it was known as Shripur and was the capital of South Kosala. Built in the 7th century, Laxman Temple is one of the finest brick temples in India. It is characterized by carvings that are exquisite and construction that is very precise. At the top of the entrance, you would find Sheshnaag acting as umbrella to Lord Shiva. The temple has incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Krishna Leela ornamental carvings. The sides of the temple have numerous erotic carvings. This is a Panchrath type of temple and engraved on its pillars are the religious segments of a temple such as Vatayan, Chitya Gawakhsa, Aja, Bharwahagana, Kirtimukh and Karna Amalak.

The inside of the temple has the Mandap (shelter), Antraal (passage) and Garbha Griha (the main house). In the temple premises, a museum housing a collection of rare statues and relics has been established by ASI (Archeological Survey of India). These relics have great significance to the Vaishnava, Shaiva, Jain and Buddhist faiths.

Then there is the Gandheswar Temple which is situated on the banks of the Mahanadi River. This temple dedicated to lord Shiva was built using the architectural remains of the ancient vihars and temples. At the top of the entrance you would find a number of pictures of Shiva-Leela. Inside the temple, you would find a statue of Buddha touching the earth and a number of statues of Shiva, Varah, Natraj, Garud, Mahisasur Mardini and Narayan.

Bhoramdeo Sanctuary & Temples
Bhoramdeo Sanctuary  

This sanctuary is located in the Kabirdham district at about a distance of 140 km from Raipur and is named after the famous Bhoramdeo temples. These 7th to 11th century A.D. rock temples are situated deep in the forests of the Maikal hills, and are often called the Khajuraho of Chattisgarh.

The Shiva temple is the most significant of them all, while there are several smaller shrines with intricate carvings, many of them erotic. Raipur is the capital of the newly formed state of Chattisgarh and is also the commercial centre of the state. The city, believed to be founded in the 14th century AD by the Kalchuri King Ram Chandra, is right at the middle of Chattisgarh. Raipur is the biggest city of the region and a fast developing important industrial centre. It serves as a regional trading center for local agricultural products, particularly rice, and is sometimes referred to as the ?rice bowl of India? as hundreds of varieties of rice are grown in the fertile plains there. It was formerly an important city of Madhya Pradesh, before the state of Chhattisgarh was carved out of it. Raipur is also the seat of the famous Ravishankar Shukla University, one of the leading institutes for higher education in the area. The city lying on the Mumbai - Nagpur - Howrah mainline is well connected by air and rail and is a good base to visit the tourist centers of the region.

  Champaran
Champaran  

This place which was earlier known as Champajhar is the birth place of Saint Vallabhacharya, who founded the Vallabh Sect. that is why this place has some religious significance. This place also has a temple constructed in his honor. Then there is also the temple of Champakeshwara Mahadeva. To stay in, you would get two large well furnished dharamsalas. In between January and February, an annual fair is held here. Followers of Saint Vallabhacharya celebrate his birth anniversary every year.

 Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary
Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary   One of the important wildlife sanctuaries in the region, it is located in the northern part of Mahasamund district of Chattisgarh, at a distance of 85 km from the Raipur airport. The flora of Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary chiefly comprises of Teak, Sal, and Bamboo; while among fauna you can see tigers, sloth bear, flying squirrels, jackals, four-horned antelopes, leopards, chinkara, black buck, jungle cat, barking deer, porcupine, monkey, bison, striped hyena, wild dogs, to name a few. The sanctuary also has a sizable bird population.
 
 

  RELIGIOUS PLACES IN RAIPUR

 Dudhadari Temple
Dudhadari Temple   You just cannot afford to miss out this monastery and temple located in the southern region of Raipur. An ancient river called Maharajbandh flows by this landmark. This ancient temple was built by King Jaitsingh in mid-17th century and dedicated to Lord Rama. The temple feature stunning murals. There is also a monastery that was named after Swami Balbhadra Das who survived only on 'Doodh' (milk) as his food. You can also find the memorials of the ex- Mahants (ministers) here.
 
Mahamaya Temple   Located in the old fort area of Raipur on the banks of the river Khaaroon, this temple is a must visit for the pilgrims. It is dedicated to Mahamaya - a revered Hindu goddess believed to be a blend of the powers of Vishnu and Shiva. Durga and Mahishasura Mardini or Jagdambe are the other names by which this popular deity is known as.
 Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple
Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple   The Mahadev Ghat is situated on the banks of the river Kharun, located 5 kms from Raipur. It is a highly revered shrine of the Hindus and the presiding deity is Lord Shiva. The Hatkeswar Mahadev temple was built in 1402 by Hajiraj Naik during the rule of Brahmadeo Rai, son of the Kalchuri king Ramachandra. Brahmdeo Rai's monumental script in Sanskrit is still preserved at the Mahant Ghasidas memorial museum. 
 Vivekananda Ashram

It is an important place of tourist interest for those who seek spiritual enlightenment and is a branch of the mission inaugurated by Swami Vivekananda in the year 1897. The organization works on the principles of ideologies that are based on renunciation and self-emancipation and attempts to achieve the overall well being of the world.

  Jagannath Dev Temple
Jagannath Dev Temple  

This temple established in 1860, located at Sadar Bazar is the first  Jagannath Temple of Chattisgarh. The temple has many legends attached to it. The main festival held here is the 'Rathyatra' also known as Lord Jagannath's Rathyatra involves a procession wherein idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Devi Subhadra are taken in chariots or 'raths'. On full moon day the 'Rathyatra' goes back to the Jagannath temple. It is believed that those who get a glimpse of the deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Devi Subhadra during the Rathyatra attain salvation 'moksha'. Due to this popular belief, the rathyatra is witnessed by people not only from Raipur but also from nearby places.
